The Tower of Babel describes the reason why there are so many beautiful languages in the world today.  It describes the impact that communication has on the closeness of the human race.

With the invention of the internet, the world has become much smaller and the word “communication” has stretched to encompass a variety of new ways to chat.

The internet allows people from opposite ends of the earth to communicate directly with each other in a matter of seconds.  It’s a wonderful tool for keeping in touch or making new friends, but is it good for our children?

Well, like many things in life the answer to that question is, it depends.  There are dangers on the internet that arise from the ability to make new friends.  It allows some people to use the internet as a tool to hurt and trick others.

But there are also many positives about the internet, like 100% Safe, FREE children’s book sites like My StoryTown.

The best way to make the most out of the internet is to make sure that you monitor what your children are up to online.  Teach them how to communicate safely.  Never let your child give out pictures of themselves and of course no specific information like addresses or schools or after-school activities.

Take a moment and talk to your children about the dangers of the internet before you show them all of the cool things that the internet can allow them to do, so that they are prepared before they begin communicating on their own.

Here is a link to a website with some good information about internet safety

Samson and Delilah is a story of love, deceit, betrayal and forgiveness.   I chose to include this story, because I feel like it shows a much more offensive God than we are all used to.  It shows a God that is willing to protect his people at all costs.  A God who loves us so much that he does not want us living in a world with those who’d rather us be dead than to believe in his holy name.  God sent Samson to defeat the enemies of God.  Samson’s life was dedicated to the Lord and his strength was his gift. When the mighty Samson is made weak by his enemies he turns to God for strength.

”David and Goliath!  A meek young man takes on a warrior giant and wins.”  This would be the headline in the paper if it were to happen in today’s society.  In some ways we do see this occurring.  In the grown-up world, we see small business owners taking on big government and fighting for their voice to be heard.  In a child’s world we see little Timmy on the playground telling big Ottis, the bully who is to pushing him to try drugs, to get lost and leave him alone.

Sadly, in today’s world this is a reality for many children.  And many children aren’t as brave as little Timmy, having the ability to say “NO” to drugs.  That’s why it is so important to talk with your children about drugs and the dangers associated with them.  You, as parents or guardians are responsible for providing your children with the weapons to fight back against drugs.  Knowledge is the best weapon!!  Like David, who used his cleverness, it sometimes takes a strong mind to bring down the giant.

If you feel that you are not knowledgeable enough to talk candidly to your children about drugs, don’t worry!  There are others who are willing to help you.  The D.A.R.E program has been around for over  two decades and has helped to educate the youth of america about the dangers of drug use.    If there is not a D.A.R.E program in your community, see what you can do about it.  You can start your own D.A.R.E program by following this link:  Start D.A.R.E. Program in Your Community

For more information regarding youth drug use or the D.A.R.E program please visit the D.A.R.E. website.

Please enjoy reading David and Goliath and please pass along the message to your children about the dangers of drug use.  Let’s stop this threat to children one “Goliath” at a time.

As I was reading Adam and Eve, I came across something that I didn’t really understand.  Perhaps, many of you were unaware of this as well.  It’s in the story after God finds out that Eve was tricked into eating the fruit by the serpent.  God then makes the serpent have to crawl on the ground and not be able to walk upright.  I never knew that snakes ever had legs.  So I did some research.

This is what I found:

1) A fossil was found near the village of al-Nammoura of a snake with two legs.  The 85cm-long (33in) creature, known as Eupodophis descouensi, comes from the Late Cretaceous Era, and is about 92 million years old.

2) Primitive snakes, such as, pythons and boa constrictors do have nub-like legs beneath their skin near their bellies.  These “nub-like legs” are actually remnants of an upper-leg bone.

I’ve always liked knowing neat facts like these.  Do you have any unique facts about snakes or other animals that you would like to share?  If you do, please post them.

I have a niece and nephew who are absolute geniuses (and I’m not being biased) and I swear every time I’m around them I learn something new.  Kids have the most interesting things to say if you take the time to listen.  So parents talk with your kids, let them give you a lecture on their favorite animal, you just might learn a thing or two.

And of course, take the time to read to your child, so that you can continue learning together.
